FilmED
FilmED is an international initiative aimed at strengthening film education in Central and Southeastern Europe on two levels. The first level focuses on learning about the art, technique, and history of filmmaking, covering elements such as cinematography, editing, directing, production, and screenwriting. The second level is an educational approach that uses films to understand social and political issues and to develop critical thinking skills.
Goals
The goal of the FilmED project is to prepare practical training and educational tools that fill the gap in film education within school curricula. These tools can be utilized by educators, teachers, and educational organizations or institutions.
We are working on creating a methodology for working with films and developing film education lesson plans that will be implemented into teachers’ daily practices. To support this effort, an interactive website is being developed, which will compile the materials being produced and provide practical support and guidance to all those interested.
We aim to reach thousands of students in Central and Southeastern Europe, increasing their knowledge of European cinema and enabling a deeper understanding of social and political contexts, fostering cultural exchange, and promoting European values.
The project is being carried out in Poland, the Czech Republic, North Macedonia, Slovakia, and Hungary.
Target groups
Educational and Film Institutions
Our primary goal is to increase the capacity of both educational and film institutions to develop and provide film education training programs for teachers. As these institutions have already established networks with educators, we will leverage these connections, using a train-the-trainer model to expand film education. With the help of the interactive online platform and the film education scenarios presented there, these institutions will get to know how to offer comprehensive and hands-on sharing of their expertise with teachers, so that the educators can introduce or enhance existing film education in their schools or kindergarten – ultimately benefiting young audiences.
We will directly involve:
- cultural and educational institutions and ngos
- educational authorities
- film festivals
- film museums or archives
Teachers and Educators
Our primary goal is for educators to bring the film education to their schools. Through FilmED, teachers will receive practical training on how to incorporate film education into their classrooms. To ensure relevance and ease of use, educators will be involved in the project from its inception, and they will be trained through real-life workshops with young audiences.
We will directly involve:
- school teachers
- kindergarten teachers
- social and vulnerable groups’ workers
- youth workers
Young people
We want young people to have greater film literacy and a better understanding of European film. We believe that film education enables them to gain knowledge of the school subjects through the appealing and thought-provoking medium of film. We will impact this group by working with the participating educators.
We will directly involve:
- kindergarten children
- elementary school students
- high school students
- young people participating in informal education
- vulnerable groups, such as minority groups, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, mental health-care communities etc.
