The Year of Andrzej Wajda 2026

At the initiative of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, the year 2026 was proclaimed the Year of Andrzej Wajda. This is a special moment to return to the master’s work, look at his films with fresh eyes, and undertake an intergenerational discussion about history, community, responsibility, and freedom.

The Andrzej Wajda Film Culture Centre joins the celebrations of the Year of Andrzej Wajda by preparing a programme of events of a nationwide and international character, which will make it possible to look again at the director’s films as important testimonies of the era and tools for reflection, to pass on his work to younger generations in accessible, educational formats, and to create new contexts for a conversation about culture, history, and the present day.

Andrzej Wajda – life and work

Andrzej Wajda (born 6 March 1926 in Suwałki – died 9 October 2016 in Warsaw) was a film and theatre director, screenwriter, and one of the most important figures in Polish culture of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. His body of work – spanning more than six decades – includes dozens of film and theatre productions, among them over 40 feature films that have become part of the canon of Polish and world cinema. In 2000, he was honoured with an Academy Honorary Award (Oscar) for lifetime achievement. He also received, among other honours, the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Man of Iron (1981), the Honorary Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the Venice Film Festival (1998), and the Honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement at the Berlinale (2006).

Wajda was among the filmmakers who co-created the so-called Polish Film School and for many years helped shape the direction of Poland’s national cinema. He was an artist who consistently portrayed the experience of community while at the same time raising questions about individual choices and the cost of responsibility.

Programme of events for the Year of Andrzej Wajda

Educational events

One of the key pillars of Wajda Year is educational activities, designed as a long-term support system for schools, teachers, educators, and young people. Their aim is to permanently include Andrzej Wajda’s work in educational practice and to develop the cultural, civic, and interpretative competences of participants at various levels of education. The programme is based on cooperation with recognised cinema researchers, film scholars, and academic staff who have been dealing for years with Wajda’s work and film education.

A nationwide conference at the Museum of Polish History in Warsaw – one of the central educational events of Wajda Year. The programme includes lectures, panels, and workshops for teachers, devoted to the educational potential of cinema, working with values, and the role of culture in shaping civic attitudes.

A year-long, nationwide programme using Andrzej Wajda’s films as a starting point for didactic work and conversation about history, ethics, freedom, solidarity, responsibility, and mechanisms of power. It includes interpretative seminars, methodological workshops, demonstration lessons, webinars, and a set of educational materials for schools.

Practical methodological support for teachers and educators: free access to selected films together with teaching materials, commentaries, and film studies lectures. The programme supports the use of Wajda’s cinema in school and out-of-school education and the development of teachers’ competences in working with film.

A series of workshops and classes based on Andrzej Wajda’s films and topics key to his work: analysis of film language, working with visual history, moral choices, and individual responsibility. The programme is complemented by nationwide screenings in art-house cinemas and cultural institutions, combined with discussion and educational activities.

Cultural events

The Year of Andrzej Wajda 2026 includes many artistic, film, and international events that broaden the context for the reception of the director’s work and introduce it into public circulation – national and global. These projects show Andrzej Wajda as a creator of global significance, whose cinema remains an important point of reference for reflection on history, politics, identity, and the contemporary world. They combine documentary, competition, promotional, and exhibition dimensions, building a multidimensional portrait of the artist.

Premiere planned for March 2026 in Poland. The film tells the story of Andrzej Wajda’s path to an honorary Oscar and the significance of this distinction for Polish culture. The film reconstructs the historical, political, and artistic context in which Wajda’s work was received in the world, showing the Oscar not only as an individual award, but also a symbol of international recognition for Polish cinema.

An event planned for March 2026 in Poland, referring to one of Andrzej Wajda’s most important films and asking questions about the relevance of its diagnosis of capitalism, exploitation, and social inequalities. The competition engages young creators and viewers in a creative dialogue with the film, encouraging reinterpretation and critical reflection on contemporary “promised lands”.

A project promoting Andrzej Wajda’s cinema abroad, carried out in March 2026 in Washington, in the summer in Los Angeles, and in November in Tokyo. The project aims to present Wajda’s work as a universal language of stories about freedom, resistance, and human dignity. Film screenings, meetings, and discussions are directed to an international audience, including academic and film circles, building an intercultural dialogue around the Polish historical experience.

A summer review of Andrzej Wajda’s films in an open-air cinema in Żoliborz, taking place in July and August 2026 in Warsaw, is open and popularising in nature. Screenings in public space foster the shared experience of cinema and conversation about films in an informal atmosphere, bringing the classics of Polish cinema closer to a wide audience.

The multimedia exhibition “Wajda Universe”, prepared for the opening of the Tęcza cinema in Autumn 2026 in Żoliborz, constitutes a summary of the Year of Andrzej Wajda. The exhibition shows the richness of motifs, themes, and aesthetics present in the director’s work, combining film, theatre, visual arts, and archival materials. “Wajda Universe” presents the director as a total artist whose work remains a living point of reference for contemporary culture and public debate.
