Description

I Dreamed the Future is a documentary essay about the period during which Andrzej Wajda went from being merely an observer of history to becoming one of its protagonists. The film covers the years 1976–2000 – from Man of Marble, through Man of Iron and the birth of Solidarity, the experience of martial law and Wajda’s involvement in public life, right up to his election to the Senate and receiving an Honorary Academy Award. The narrative is based on Wajda’s personal notes, as read by Agnieszka Holland. Through the director’s archival footage and words, we discover not only the artist and the citizen, but also a man full of doubts, grappling with the responsibility for his choices and the price of public engagement.

Director

Joanna Rożen-Wojciechowska graduated in film studies from the Jagiellonian University and completed a postgraduate course in creative writing at Collegium Civitas. She also trained at the Polish School of Reportage and took part in the Doc Lab Poland deveopment programme. For almost ten years, she was the programme director at Kino Polska TV, and subsequently headed the Film Screenings and Events Department at the National Centre for Film Culture in Łódź. In 2010, she received the Hot Bird TV Award for her work at Kino Polska. She is the producer of Katarzyna Klimkiewicz’s film Hanoi–Warszawa, which won the European Film Award. Since 2018, she has been the director of The Wajda Film Centre in Warsaw, shaping the institution’s programme and expanding its activities in the areas of film education, the promotion of film culture, and the popularisation of Wajda’s legacy in Poland and abroad. The documentary film I Dreamed the Future is her directorial debut.
